Year 1 Overview

The Coopetition Working Group has determined, through discussions in the working group and subgroups during initial months of the project period the following deliverables for each of the GREI generalist repositories. This best practice template describes consensus capabilities each repository plans with the goal of making NIH funded data more discoverable and usable. Each repository will reflect their own implementation plans as updates to their individual project plan with the implementation and timeline determined by each repository as agreed with the NIH GREI Project team.

These activities will be performed under the NIH GREI Coopetition CWG Code of Conduct and in accordance with the GREI Program Charter to meet the vision, mission, goals, and objectives.
In order to support the goals, the GREI repositories will aim to collect feedback and input from our stakeholders and research communities as part of the project activities, which could inform iterations on this plan. The GREI subgroups have adopted an agile approach.

GREI Objectives

  1. Desirable Characteristics
  2. Consistent Metadata
  3. Search & Browse
  4. Analytics and Reporting
  5. Use Cases
  6. Connect Digital Objects
  7. QA/QC
  8. Training & Community Engagement

Year 1 Objectives and Tasks

(NOTE: Task numbers updated to align with Y3 numbering scheme)

The Coopetition Working Group will explore collaboration with the National Library of Medicine Dataset Metadata Model (DATMM) team on the metadata model development and implementation across the generalist repositories. Potential inclusion of GREI repositories in the data catalog will also be explored.

  • Y3 GREI Objective 3 - Search & Browse #10
The following search and browse capabilities will be supported by each generalist repository:

    • 3.1 Simple search, i.e. “google-style”, Free-text search that uses standard search-engine behavior for determining results and relevancy, without advanced facets or filters
    • 3.2 Advanced search with queryable metadata fields for author, institution, funder and grant-id. Taxonomy recommendations of FundREF, ROR, and ORCID require additional analysis and discussion for future inclusion.
    • 3.3 Filtering results by funding, publication year and content type
    • 3.4 Sorting by relevance and publication date included as a future consideration following further discussion
  • Y3 GREI Objective 4 - Analytics and Reporting #11 (i.e., open metrics)
The Coopetition Working Group has adopted the Make Data Count principles for reporting aggregated research data usage and citations, which rely on the COUNTER standard.

5.1 Data Usage
  • 5.11 Standardize data views and downloads against the COUNTER Code of Practice for Research Data**
  • 5.12 Expose views and downloads to the public through UI or through sending to DataCite (or both)
5.2 Data Citation
  • 5.21 Contribute: Collect author asserted related articles and other relevant (to each repository community) scholarly outputs (e.g., preprints, software, and datasets through UI)
  • 5.22 Contribute: Send related scholarly outputs to DataCite with proper relation types in metadata
  • 5.23 Display: Expose related data citations from external sources (e.g., EventData, Dimensions, etc) to published data datasets on landing pages
5.3 Metadata for Data Metrics
  • 5.31 Funding Information: Collect funding body ID (e.g., Crossref Funder Registry) and grant number for biomedical and life science datasets and send to DataCite

  • 5.32 Institutional Information: Collect institutional affiliations with a ROR ID** and send to DataCite

  • 5.33 Disciplinary Information: Collect disciplinary information for biomedical and life science datasets and send to DataCite

  • 5.34 People Information: Collect (not required) ORCIDs where possible for researchers and expose through ORCID profile and/or DataCite**

  • Y3 GREI Objective 5 - Use Cases #12
The following use cases will be supported by each generalist repository to enable the sharing and discovery of data:

    • 5.1 As an NIH-funded researcher, I want to select a repository to share my data, so that I can comply with my data management and sharing plan and the conditions of my grant.
    • 5.2 As a researcher, I want to find research data of interest so that I can validate findings, reuse data, and build on work within my discipline.
    • 5.3 As an institution, I want to report on all datasets from my institution, so that I can ensure compliance of research data sharing and management plan commitments by our researchers.
    • 5.4 As a funder from a specific NIH institute or in general, I want to find datasets we have funded, so that I can report on compliance with policies, and track impact of research funding and usage of data.
  • Y3 GREI Objective 8 - Training & Community Engagement #15 (Previously Training & Outreach)
The Coopetition Working Group has developed the following plan of activities for each repository to contribute to in order to support the training and outreach goals of the project.

    • 8.1 Public shared calendar of training and outreach events including both individual and jointly organized events
    • 8.2 GREI Collaborative Webinar series - jointly organized, post slides and recordings publicly
    • 8.3 Promotion of individual and collaborative training and outreach events in collaboration with NIH
      • 8.31 Communications plan for individual repositories and GREI
      • 8.32 Webpage on GREI ODSS website where we can post information and resources
    • 8.4 Training Resources, which may include the following types:
      • 8.41 Guide to how each GREI repository meets NIH Desirable Characteristics of Data Repositories
      • 8.42 Update Generalist Repository Feature chart Guide pointing to training and help resources for each GREI repository
      • 8.43 Guide or tool to help researchers select a generalist repository based on use case and needed features
      • 8.44 Guidance on including generalist repositories in DMSP’s for NIH funding, planning for data sharing costs, reporting on those published materials
      • 8.45 Adaptable training materials (slides, speaker notes, handouts, libguide text) for academic support staff to adapt for outreach to researchers
    • 8.5 Collaborations with NIH
      • 8.51 Collaborate with NIH Library or other NIH intramural programs to provide training to NIH intramural researchers
      • 8.52 Collaborate with NIH on training and outreach within NIH including program officers and other NIH staff
      • 8.53 Collaborate with NIH to point to GREI resources from other NIH data sharing sites
    • 8.6 Outreach to academic research support communities (e.g. conferences)
    • 8.7 Gather community feedback about generalist repositories and GREI initiatives during and/or following training and outreach events
    • 8.8 GREI Workshop: The Coopetition Working Group will jointly collaborate to develop and conduct a GREI workshop through the following activities:
      • 8.81 Planning in current period of performance
      • 8.82 Event possibly occurring in future period of performance
      • 8.83 Summary report to be prepared following workshop

Progress on Year 2 Goals:

I (Lisa) suggest adapting "Summary of Year 1" section of Y2 plan, but note that it is not complete since it was written in late 2022 before Y1 had ended.
