Authentication without popup

Is there a way to not use a popup for authentication? It is causing issues in some clients, like e.g. Ferdium and other kiosk-like clients, which have no popup support and therefore open the popup in the default browser, where the authentication succeeds, but it never gets back to the real client. Haven't found where the popup is enforced, but would be happy to give it a try if you could point me in the right direction.
