Currently, we prompt for the username and password on the backend console. The user has no idea what went wrong or what is happening. There is no user feedback.

Looks similar indeed. I guess there will eventually be a difference in Theia's remote browser version and desktop electron version. Even though the terminal can be used as a workaround, it should IMO remain a workaround until there is a more user friendly option inside of Theia, hence, a dialog of some sort providing positive and negative feedback and also offering the next steps.
